How to start racing in San Diego.

If  you have a boat start here, otherwise jump to #7:

  1. Join a Yacht Club or Sailing Organization
Most racing will require membership in a yacht club or yacht racing organization affiliated with the Southern California Yachting Association.

Check out the great local San Diego yacht clubs and sailing associations.

For a list of SCYA's Affiliated Clubs, go to the SCYA Home Page

If you just want to race in the Summer Beer Cans, join the Cortez Racing Association.

Also, check out the Women's Yacht Racing Fleet of San Diego (WYRF).

  2. Submit an Application to PHRF San Diego
You need to join PHRF and your boat will need a Rating Certificate.
In the San Diego area, please contact the PHRF San Diego Fleet Secretary by email and request an Application for Membership and Rating Certificate.

Or, click on Membership Forms Page 1 Page 2 to view (and print) a copy.

Complete the Application and send it to PHRF San Diego along with the annual dues.

  3. Get a Sail Number if your boat does not already have one.
Include the sail number information with the Application.
To obtain a Sail Number, contact SCYA at 562-433-7426.
Contact any sailmaker for the actual stick-on numbers and assistance in applying them correctly.
You need the same sail number on all your sails (should be obvious, but ...).
  4. PHRF San Diego Rating Certificate
A Rating Certificate for your boat will be mailed to you.
  5. PHRF Southern California Rating Certificate
If you plan to race north of San Diego, you will need to repeat this process by joining PHRF Southern California.
  6. Consider joining US Sailing which is our organizing body for racing rules, regatta management and more.  Joining US Sailing will give you the latest copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and more.
  7. Pick some races, find crew and go have fun!
