Need
to plan a racing schedule???
It
is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of races out there. Here are
a few hints.
- The complete schedule for San Diego is put together by SDAYC and
published in the San Diego Log in late December. Check for the online
version either at SDAYC or PHRF
San Diego websites. Note PHRF San Diego selects a number of
these as the yearly Championship Series with Trophies awarded at the annual
dinner meeting in early January the following year. If you are a PHRF
member, look for the information package in your mailbox or the website for
details in late December.
- If you are just getting into racing, start with the Cortez Racing
Association races. CRA
has year round fun racing mostly on the San Diego Bay. Also, try the Women's
Yacht Racing Fleet (WYRF) or your yacht club for family fleet races.
- Don't miss the Summer Beer Can races put on by CRA,
Thirsty Thursday races put on by WYRF
after the Beer Cans or Mission Bay Yacht
Club's TNT Series all summer. Also, SCYA's
MidWinters over President's Day Weekend are always fun.
- If you are more experienced, check out the high profile regattas in
Southern California including NHYC's
Ahmanson, SDYC's Yachting Cup, CYC's
Cal Race Week and Golison & Golison's
North
Sails Week (or whatever it is being called) to name just a few.
Pick up a copy of the January Santana
which will have the Southern California race schedule.
- For ocean races, try SWYC's
Cabrillo Series starting in January, the NOSA's
Big Ensenada (Newport-Ensenada) race the last weekend in April, MBYC's
Mission Bay-Oceanside along with SWYC's
Oceanside-San Diego race over Memorial Day weekend, BCYC
& SDYC's Newport-San Diego race in
early August, SDYC's Bishop Rock race in
late August, CRA's Around North Coronado Island race in mid September, DWYC/SWYC
Spyglass race (Dana Point-San Diego) in late September and SWYC's
Little Ensenada (San Diego-Ensenada) the first weekend of October.
These are just a few with lots more to choose from.
