AREA RACE OFFICER:    BRUCE GREENE   (SDYC)

The Area Race Officer is a member of the US SAILING Area Race Officer Working group.  This group meets during each of the two US SAILING meetings and makes recommendations to the US SAILING Race Management Committee concerning all applications for Club, Regional, and National Race Officers.  They also discuss problems and solutions concerning Race Management issues in their Areas.

The Area Race Officer is responsible for coordinating the Basic and Advanced Race Management Seminars held in Area J.   Each year SCYA sponsors 5 US SAILING Race Management Seminars – one in each of the Harbor areas.  These are the one day (usually 8:00am to 5:00pm on Saturdays except Sunday in Del Rey) seminars that meet the US SAILING seminar and testing requirements for the Club Race Officer Certifications.  The usual schedule is:

  • San Diego                 – mid January
  • San Pedro                – late January
  • Newport Harbor         - early February
  • Channel Islands         - late February
  • Del Rey                      - early March

The actual schedule is published each year in the SCYA Search Light publication and is available on this web site (see navigation on left).  The schedule is also usually published in various local boating publications.

There is usually one Advanced Two Day Seminar given in Area J each year, usually in the Fall.  This seminar meets the US SAILING seminar and testing requirements for Regional and National Race Officer.  The dates are available on this web site and emailed out to all the certified Race Officers in Area J.  If you wish to be notified by Email of these Advanced Seminars, notify the Area Race Officer.

The Area Race Officer is the collection point for all applications for Certified Race Officer.  Applications for Regional and National Race Officer should be to him at least 60 days prior to the US SAILING meeting so he has time to obtain the necessary paper work from your references and to get your application to US SAILING 30 days prior to their meeting.  Applications for Club Race Officer can come any time as the Area Race Officer does all the processing and approving at the this level.
