Southern California plus Arizona, Utah, and Southern Nevada is designated Area J by US SAILING which enables this area to send representatives to the national championships.

For the ‘ladder’ events, Area J crews are generally selected by a Harbor Area Regatta (quarterfinals).  The winner (plus sometimes the second place competitor and occasionally some selected by direct resumes) then race in the Area Championship (semifinals).  The winners (plus occasionally the second place competitor) represent Area J at the US SAILING Championship.

For the ‘open’ events, US SAILING accepts resumes directly from well-qualified competitors.

US SAILING designates the type of boats and selects a yacht club to host the National Championships.  This information is post when available on their web site a http://www.ussailing.org/Championships/It is also listed in this document when available, in the section for each championship.

The Area J Championships (semifinals) are held by a yacht club selected by the US SAILING Area J Chairman for that event.  It is desirable, but not required, that the boat used be the same as the National boat.  This information, when available, is obtainable below by clicking the name of the desired event or on trophy name in the navigation block on the left.  It is also discussed at SCYA and YRUSC meetings and printed in the SCYA Search Light publication.

The Harbor Area Championships (quarterfinals) are held by a yacht club selected by the Harbor Association and their information is usually available on their web sites and discussed at their Association meetings.
